Editorial spread for Brandeis Magazine (2019)
Article: Play Nice by Sarah C. Baldwin
Art director: Eson Laurent
Project: One full page and one half-page illustration, fully coloured, for the 2019 issue of Brandeis Magazine
I got into watching Let’s Play videos on YouTube during college, when it was still a fairly niche genre on the platform. I could spend hours, even entire days, doing this. Most of the time I’d have it on in the background while working on projects or doing chores, but there are times where I would watch it properly, like a movie. The games range from short, simple experiences to complex and gripping stories with action, drama and high emotional stakes. So when my class was given four articles to read and the chance to pitch for two of them, this piece on Global Game Jam was my top choice. Happily, I was their top choice for artist, too.
Besides getting good feedback and guidance, I attribute this win to really understanding the work that goes into these competitions. I’ve watched many Game Jame video playthroughs by the YouTuber John Wolfe and admired the imaginative and clever concepts participants can come up with in just 48 hours. This article opened my eyes to the collaborative nature of GGJ and gave me the idea of drawing a small but mighty team working with giant equipment to bring their visions to life.

Hand-drawn and coloured digitally on Photoshop, these drawings were used for social media posts to give this lifestyle brand’s online content a whimsical and nostalgic feel. Except the one below of the MRT during an early morning commute. That one is just depressing. It was very well-received though.

The 2019 issue of U.S.-based magazine Bay State Parent Magazine focused on Summer Camp. There are many activities to be enjoyed in summer camp; I chose football, or soccer, for my illustration. It was not chosen for the cover in the end, but it was still included in the issue as a panel image.
Card design for the game product Drop Mix for Harmonix Music System, a video game development company in Boston. The theme was exploration and discovery, and the colour palette had to be limited to two complementary colours. I chose yellow and purple. Made in 2019.
T-Shirt design for the 36th annual Run of the Charles for the Charles River Watershed Association in 2018. Sadly, I lost the picture of the race participants wearing the shirts that CRWA kindly sent me.
Library card design for Half Price Books in Dallas, Texas. As a bookworm, this was very exciting. The drawing was done entirely freehand.
